Ambassador Car to bid farewell soon | Timeline of Amby

Symbol of Indian politics and power after Indian independence - The Ambassador Car is bidding farewell soon. As of 25 May 2014, the Hindustan Motors has suspended the production of the Ambassador. For more than fifty years it has been the face of Indian politics, often called "The king of Indian roads". The White Ambassador, the product of Hind Motors Ltd., is considered as an official vehicle of Govt. of India and remained first choice among bureaucrats and politicians. Car once considered status symbol in India, has its equal reputation in Indian police and army, police used white colour version whereas army people loves black colour. Air Force chose its sky colour version.

Recently Hind Motors decided to shut down its Uttarpara Plant in Hugli distt. of West Bengal, for unknown time. The main reason behind this is the inability of company to make desired changes in concept of car, for its sustenance in market and to compete with other foreign brands. It lags behind in terms of security issues when it comes to use in official works, viz. for politicians.

Timeline of Ambassador Car

  • In 1942, Hind Motors came up with first indigenous car of India. They sat-up first and only production plant in India.
  • In 1948, Hindustan Motors shifted its assembly plant from Port Okha in Gujarat to Uttarpara in West Bengal.
  • IN 1957, it makes debut in England and labelled as the 1957 Hindustan Landmaster.
  • In 1958, it started the production of Ambassador car, keeping in mind the needs of folks.
  • Modelled on Britain’s Morris Oxford, the Ambassador was the first car to be made in India.
  • Period of 80s is considered most successful for Ambassador. It was the time when company sold 24000 units per year. Then entered the foreign auto-makers like Suzuki, Ford, Hyundai etc. in India with new colours and models.
  • In mid 1980s, Maruti Suzuki introduced its cheaper 800 hatchback, the biggest rival of Ambassador.
  • Company made all efforts and made several changes in model to rise the sales.
  • In 2010, BS IV emission standards were rolled out in 11 Indian cities, including Kolkata.
  • On April 1, 2011 sale of Ambassador taxis had been banned.
  • In 2011, The company could only sell around 2,500 cars.
  • Recently, the plant was producing a less than 150 vehicles per month, with average of 5 cars a day.
  • The company had stopped paying wages to workers a few months back and has finally stopped production on 25th May 2014.

5 Most successful Open source Operating Sytems | List of Cloud based Operating Systems

As we already know, Microsoft has ended its support for Windows XP, that means no more updates are going to be launched from their side now. In order to move forward with their new operating systems Windows 8 and 8.1, they finally ended the support for Windows XP, one of the most successful operating systems ever, on April 8, 2014. Technically computers will not stop working but now, there will be no more patches and drivers for XP. It is quite known fact that most of the households in India and other parts of the World still using unregistered or cracked versions, but from now onwards, it will not be possible even to update the Windows XP drivers etc. For more check Windows XP Tricks and Facts

So, what next ? Today, we are giving you a list of open source or free-to-use operating system available in market.

Here is a list of Freely available operating Systems :
  • OpenIndiana : It was developed by Sun MicroSystems, which is solaris based and open source in nature. In April 2009, US business software giant Oracle bought struggling Sun Microsystems and its Java programming language for $7.4 billion, which forced OpenSolaris Project to end. After this, developers working on OpenSolaris splits from Oracle and started developing, what we known as Openindiana, which was based on Unix and Linux like that of OpenSolaris. Till now, many changes got induced into OpenIndiana, from its file system to applications and packages. OpenIndiana is very good option, if you want to give Linux a try. It is available in 32-bit and 64-bit. It needs ~1GB RAM. It best works on Servers and Desktops. It is available on http://www.openindiana.org.

  • ReactOS : The ReactOS more or less will give you a feel of Windows operating system.  Likewise Windows XP, 7, Server 2012, it is also based on Windows NT architecture. It is an open source, freely available OS. Almost all the Windows XP applications are accessible through ReactOS. This is the best alternative of Windows to date. It looks like Windows but not based on Linux. The currently available version of ReactOS in market is 0.3.16, which is still in beta phase, sized about 75.5MB only, which is far less than Windows size. It can be used through Live CD version and Virtual Box. Download ReactOS : http://www.reactos.com
  • Google Chromium OS : It is an advanced operating system of Google, designed especially for Google Notebooks, sometimes also known as Chromebooks. It is Web-based and very light. It works on customized version of browser Google Chrome. Applications can be accessed from Google Suite. The OS is backed by Google but originally it was developed by freelancer developers. It can be downloaded from Hexxeh's website : http://www.chromeos.hexxeh.net. Here, Vanilla version of OS is available. Due to its unique features, it is considered as a futuristic OS. When Google started talking about possibilities of Web-based OS, everybody thought it is near to impossible task, but as per today's scenario, even Microsoft is working on their web-based OS. Official Website : http://dev.chromium.org/chromium-os

  • Haiku Project : Haiku is another open source OS developed especially for personal computing. Its uniqueness is its interface and its capability of running every task. It is quite user-friendly and easy-to-use. It was developed initially in 1991 with name BOS. The next version launched back in 2001, after that it was ceased. It was re-launched by Haiku community and designed to support multi-core processor. It is free of cost and its ISO can be downloaded to burn into CD. You can install it as  a virtual machine image. It size is about 250MB but still light in weight as compared to other Linux distributions and windows versions. Official website is http://haiku-os.org

  • FreeBSD : The biggest advantage that we have in Linux is its security system. It is virus-proof as well as hacking proof OS, but it cannot run .EXE files directly. Its interface is similar to that of XP but windows apps cannot be installed on it. It requires a special software WINE in order to run .EXE files. Official Website : http://freebsd.org Here, we don't have MS office and Outlook, but alternatively, Libra office and Open office is their to serve the task, which is even better than MS office. The best distribution of Linux is http://linuxmint.com
