5 Most successful Open source Operating Sytems | List of Cloud based Operating Systems

As we already know, Microsoft has ended its support for Windows XP, that means no more updates are going to be launched from their side now. In order to move forward with their new operating systems Windows 8 and 8.1, they finally ended the support for Windows XP, one of the most successful operating systems ever, on April 8, 2014. Technically computers will not stop working but now, there will be no more patches and drivers for XP. Here is a list of Freely available operating Systems :  
  • OpenIndiana : It was developed by Sun MicroSystems, which is solaris based and open source in nature. In April 2009, US business software giant Oracle bought struggling Sun Microsystems and its Java programming language for $7.4 billion, which forced OpenSolaris Project to end. After this, developers working on OpenSolaris splits from Oracle and started developing, what we known as Openindiana, which was based on Unix and Linux like that of OpenSolaris. Till now, many changes got induced into OpenIndiana, from its file system to applications and packages. OpenIndiana is very good option, if you want to give Linux a try. It is available in 32-bit and 64-bit. It needs ~1GB RAM. It best works on Servers and Desktops. It is available on http://www.openindiana.org. 
 
  • ReactOS : The ReactOS more or less will give you a feel of Windows operating system.  Likewise Windows XP, 7, Server 2012, it is also based on Windows NT architecture. It is an open source, freely available OS. Almost all the Windows XP applications are accessible through ReactOS. This is the best alternative of Windows to date. It looks like Windows but not based on Linux. The currently available version of ReactOS in market is 0.3.16, which is still in beta phase, sized about 75.5MB only, which is far less than Windows size.   • Google Chromium OS : It is an advanced operating system of Google, designed especially for Google Notebooks, sometimes also known as Chromebooks. It is Web-based and very light. It works on customized version of browser Google Chrome. Applications can be accessed from Google Suite. The OS is backed by Google but originally it was developed by freelancer developers. It can be downloaded from Hexxeh's website : http://www.chromeos.hexxeh.net. Here, Vanilla version of OS is available. Due to its unique features, it is considered as a futuristic OS. When Google started talking about possibilities of Web-based OS, everybody thought it is near to impossible task, but as per today's scenario, even Microsoft is working on their web-based OS.   • Haiku Project : Haiku is another open source OS developed especially for personal computing. Its uniqueness is its interface and its capability of running every task. It is quite user-friendly and easy-to-use. It was developed initially in 1991 with name BOS. The next version launched back in 2001, after that it was ceased. It was re-launched by Haiku community and designed to support multi-core processor. It is free of cost and its ISO can be downloaded to burn into CD. You can install it as  a virtual machine image.   • FreeBSD : The biggest advantage that we have in Linux is its security system. It is virus-proof as well as hacking proof OS, but it cannot run .EXE files directly. Its interface is similar to that of XP but windows apps cannot be installed on it. It requires a special software WINE in order to run .EXE files. This browser based OS gives you option slike user mail, calender, audio player, RSS reader, contact manager, word processor, notepad, command line interpreter, finder etc. It also supports mobile OS enables you to access files through mobile or tablet. 
  • SilveOS : http://silveos.com The OS with its interface like windows, based on silverlight technology, which can be run on any browser. It includes various built in apps like music, notes, word processor, solitaire game etc.
