History of Champions Trophy

The ICC Champions Trophy is a Premier One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is a second most important cricket tournament after the ICC Cricket World Cup. The inaugural edition was played as the ICC Knock Out Tournament in 1998. It has been played every two years since then. The name changed to the Champions Trophy in 2002. The number of teams competing has varied over the years; originally all the ICC’s full members took part, and from 2000 to 2004 associate members were also involved. Since 2009, the tournament has only involved the eight test playing nations. The ICC already declared that the 2013 Champions Trophy will be the last, waiming to include ICC World Test Championship in calendar.

The first two tournaments, in 1998 and 2000, were intended to raise the profile of the game in the host nations, Bangladesh and Kenya.
