Yes, you read it right, on July 16, 2013 Microsoft announced that there will be no more support for Windows XP operating system from April 8, 2014. Keeping in mind, the increased number of attacks on Windows XP laptops and computers in recent years, Microsoft denied to extend its support for one of the most popular operating systems ever. Microsoft will no longer be providing any security update or service packs for Windows XP. There will be no more free or paid updates available for this OS.
It is clear that if there will not be any security updates available, the systems running on OS will easily become vulnerable to all type of malicious attacks online and offline. Microsoft's withdrawal of services means that users only left with 9 months to have their complete migration from the XP to any other OS viz. Windows 8 or further advancements. So, technically computers will not stop working but yes, there will be no more patches and drivers for XP after April 2014.
It is mentionable that Windows XP is there in market since its release on October 25, 2001. As per records published as in march 2012, Windows XP share in desktop operating systems market is around 47% which is far more than Windows 7 (~38%). Windows XP is available in several editions, each with its own set of features catered to the needs of specific user types. These editions include Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.
Microsoft wants to phase out XP in order to concentrate on new OS like Windows 7,8,8.1. Windows 8 was released in October 2012. Recently they released update for Windows 8 and named it 8.1.
NOTE: Users can still use XP after April 2014 but it will be like “at your own risk”
situation for customers, because third party softwares or updates may
be there to keep the OS working intact but nobody can ensure whether it
will be 100% satisfactory or not. For any customer who choose to set up
new systems running XP, it will still be able to legally activate their
system to take advantage of all the remaining patches being released for
XP.
