Google is on shutting down spree, after only 8 months of shutting down of Orkut, Google is going to shut down GTalk, gmail messenger. On February 3rd, 2015, Google sent a system message to users stating,
"Google Talk app for Windows will stop working on Feb 16 2015. It is
replaced by the new Hangouts Chrome app."
Now, all users will have to use Hangouts instead of GTalk. Google stated that hangouts is future of GTalk. They want to replace IM service with hangouts, which works only on google chrome.
History of GTalk
GTalk was released on August 24, 2005English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Spanish. Google Talk is also the name of the client applications previously offered by Google to use the service. In 2013, Google replaced Google Talk client software offerings with those of Google Hangouts.
The instant messaging service is also known as "gtalk," "gchat," or "gmessage" to its users, although Google does not endorse those names. Google already hinted 2 years back on retirement of GTalk. As of May 2013, Google has announced it is planning to drop support for XMPP in favor of Google+ Hangouts, with some or all interoperability being removed by May 2014.

- A message is restricted to 32767 characters.
- Certain smileys are recognized by Google Talk and will be highlighted in blue color.

- You cannot bold nor italicize more than 100 characters at a time. If you exceed the limit, the desired effect will not take place.
- You can right click on the message notification pop-up window to close it.
- To change the display name on Google Talk, you need to go to Gmail account properties and change it there.
- In your away message you can add a website URL, and it will be clickable in conversation windows.
- Don’t need to say yes or no when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this). The Gmail account ‘user@gmail.com’ can’t be invited as your friend.

A hidden game uncovered in Google Talk
Open the about dialog box right-clicking on the Google Talk icon in the windows taskbar. In the about screen you can see ‘play 23 21 13 16 21 19 . 7 1 13 5′. Each number represents a letter. a=1, b=2, c=3 … When you decrypt this message you get: ‘play wumpus.game’. To play the game, invite wumpus.game@gmail.com as a friend, then type “Play”. You’ll now start a game of Hunt the Wumpus.

How To Make Conference Calls
- To have conference calls in Gtalk : Open up a copy of Google Talk on all computers with which you wish to conference.
- After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for Google Talk but at the end of the target add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read
“C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex.
- Open Second instance of the software on every user’s computer.After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.
Login to multiple Google Talk accounts simultaneously
- Create a shortcut of Google Talk messenger on your desktop or any other preferred location .(To create a shortcut, right click on your Google Talk messenger application select Send To Desktop(create shortcut) ).
- Right click on the Google Talk messenger icon and select Properties option.
- Modify target location text “c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe” /startmenu to
“c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex - Click Ok and you are done with this .
